Lets make a Tier List
Here's the list set up: Top High Middle Low Bottom
All the characters: * Bowser * Diddy Kong * Donkey Kong * Fox * Ice Climbers * Ike * King Dedede * Kirby * Link * Lucas * Mario * Meta Knight * Olimar * Peach * Pikachu * Pit * Pokémon Trainer * Squirtle * Ivysaur * Charizard * Samus * Zero Suit Samus * Wario * Yoshi * Zelda/Sheik * Captain Falcon * Falco * Ganondorf * Jigglypuff * Lucario * Luigi * Marth * Mr. Game & Watch * Ness * R.O.B. * Snake * Sonic * Toon Link * Wolf
If you believe a character belongs in a certain part of the tier please give an explanation why. Remember this is all subject to change.
Thanks

Just my opinion. I find it easy to rank the two top tiers but every thing else is meh.
Top Meta knight Snake Rob
High Falco Marth King DeDeDE Mr. Game & Watch Toon Link Olimar
Middle Link Ness Kirby Diddy kong Mario Fox Ice Climbers Lucas Pikachu Wolf Pit Luigi Zelda Pokemon trainer Pit Yoshi
Low Peach Lucario Bowser Sheik Ike Samus Lucario Wario
Bottom Donkey kong Ganondorf Jiggily Puff

Just to continue our on-going argument over Marth: I don't think he is top tier anymore. I think they took away the only thing making him top tier in Melee, his longer than physical matter sword, and tried to replace it with some speed. I don't think it complements it well enough to make him a top character. That being said, I have not played against someone that can use him to his full potential yet so I'm still waiting to see what he is capable of. P.S. Ice Climbers should have their own category as highest possible tier. You know what I mean

I am just going by tournament results, and what other websites have as the offical tier list. Since it is done by tournaments, and alot of people still play as Marth, he is currently doing well. He is placing in top 4's and top8's constantly, therefore I believe he is top tier because the results of tournaments have told me so.

That doesn't necessarily mean that he is good though, that's like saying gamebattles' ranking system is effective because the top players are there because they have lots of wins. he he

That is not true. I say this because the Marths that are doing well are the ones that count. The ones that do poopy don't. This is becuase the guys that are winning with Marth are the ones that know how to use him. Characters are based on their wins and not their loses because if 10 people use marth but 2 of them always win or top 4 all the time, that means that if all 10 marths had the same play style then the top 4 would all be Marth. So i guess basicly what I am saying is that the characters are rated on how well the best person can play them, since that is who wins the tournaments.

And thus my case in point: why rank characters based on the players that play them. Is Marth winning tournaments because he is a good character? Or is it because the people that play as him are better players? Ultimately, their rank this way is impossible to determine. It is way too dynamic and a list is hardly an accurate representation of ability. I think the best way to rank characters is by a chart (granted I don't believe any of the current ones though). You can't rank rock, paper, scissors in a list because they have advantages and disadvantages with each other. However, you can point out that rock crushed scissor but gets covered by paper, etc. etc. By this I mean of course speed beats slow recovery etc. I think if you are going to make a listed order, rank them by how many other characters they have advantages against. And in that fashion I don't think Marth has enough base advantages over characters to be in a high tier. Blah.

The tiers are not ranking characters by how good they are they are ranked by potential to be playable. the results of the tournaments show the potential of a character being used. So, the question is asked "who has the most potential" and we get that from the (the player was) tournament results. In melee the reason why Marth was on top of everyone was because we won the most tournaments and therefore proved that he wasn't the best but had the most potential to win. I may be talking in circles but that is how i see it.

When I was thinking of making a tier list, I meant one of our own...not ripped off a what others have to say. I was also thinking using that tier list but it is solely based on tournament participation and isn't based on anything else.
I suggest we make our own tier list based on what characters we believe have potential.

Jeremy, one of the reasons Marth is a top tier character right now is because lots of people are playing him. The more people playing him, the more likely he is to be top tier regardless of how good he actually is. That's just probability talking.
Now get back on topic and talk about the tier list.
Here's my tier list (incomplete).
Bottom Tier: Donkey Kong Jigglypuff Gannon Samus/Zero Suit
High: Zelda (Sheik would be middleish) Sonic (has potential) Marth Bowser Pokemon Trainer Kirby Pit
Top: Metaknight ROB
Those are my predictions for those few characters.

I don't know about you but the reason I believe what I believe is because I do research on the tiers, I go to other sites and see what the tournaments results are. I watch videos on how people play I don't just say I think marth is top tier because I think so. I think you guys should go to the other sites and see what they have to say, you don't have to limit your debates and knowledge to one site.

You said lots of people were playing Marth in lots of tournaments. Lots of people playing Marth means lots of Marths going into the top 8/top 10.
Never said you were saying what you thought, just explaining one of the reasons why Marth is 'top tier'.

You don't look at how many marths were in the tournament you look only at the ones that did good because they are the only ones that matter.
